Biography

Written by Ronin

Unlike most of the composers that have worked for Square (Enix), Yasunori Mitsuda wasn't really interested in music at a young age. He was far more interested in sports, and wanted to become like Tiger Woods one day, as he had a passion for golf; amongst other things. Unfortunately for him though, he didn't have the really have the commitment to back up his aspirations and ended up quitting all his sports due to this fact. During this time though, he did learn to play the piano, and in his teenage years he started to appreciate music more after some film scores grabbed his attention. It was this, accompanied with his interest in electronics and technology that persuaded him to invest in a computer, so that he could compose music for video games.

It was during his high school years though that his dreams would soon be realised when he applied to Square. At the time though, he saw himself as more of a film composer, but he decided to take the opportunity anyway. He sent away some samples, and was given an interview and eventually employed by Square in 1992, which saw his first role being a Sound Effects programmer for Hanjuku Hero.

Following similar roles on future titles for Square, Mitsuda realised that he didn't want to be typecast as a Sound Effects programmer, as he saw himself as a composer. Because of this, he marched into Sakaguchi's office (Vice-President of Square) and demanded to be given a compositional role; or he would quit the company. It has the desired effect and Mitsuda was given the leading role for Chrono Trigger, alongside Nobuo Uematsu and Noriko Matsueda. The music for the game was given met with great success, and the effort that put in Mitsuda's didn't go unnoticed. He was now firmly established as a composer and was now treated as such by Square, with them giving him a new compositional role on Front Mission: Gun Hazard.

He then worked on numerous projects for Square, including Xenogears and Chrono Cross, but in 1998 decided that he wanted to leave the company and go freelance. Since doing so, he has been involved with many projects including Legaia Duel Saga and the Shadow Hearts series while also taking part in many arranged projects such as tributes for the music from venerable game franchises like Street Fighter.
