This is my favourite book from the “Piano Collection” series. I have had hours of enjoyment (and not so much enjoyment, if you know what I mean!) and pleasure with these pieces. They have melodies which are very nice accompanied by even nicer harmonies which complement the pieces well. These pieces, I think, exploit the piano in a way that many others don’t, which are a credit to the composers and arrangers of this book. The uniqueness of the overall effects that these pieces have, attracted me into acquiring them, and I have never experienced any greater feeling when playing them compared to others.

I am an experienced pianist and I think that every piece that is in this book has its own challenges if they are played properly. While some are more challenging than others, (e.g.: Creature Creation, Demise) in the right that they are musically (and physically) demanding, pieces like Yuna's Ballad and Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~ also have their subtle difficulties that can only be resolved through perseverance, smart thinking and using a very fine comb to dissect every part of these pieces.

One piece of criticism I do have is that the pieces don’t have many performance instructions, some lack phrasing and dynamic indication (though if you listen to the CD, you could pick it up, if you have time for that sort of thing) and there is an absence of what classical music has, which is why people enjoy classical music so much. But, in saying that, this could also be a positive thing, because people like me who like don’t like to be told what to do can add what they like to the songs. It is one thing to play a song good; how someone else wants you to play it, but the way that these pieces are written, I think, mixed with some musical intelligence, you can go a step further than that and put your personal performance stamp on the piece without someone wanting to hunt you down because you played it f instead of p.

Enjoy this book, that’s defiantly think that’s what it’s designed for.

The style for this collection is highly diverse, but you get a strong feeling of jazz overall. Akagi Party, Creature Create and Paine's Theme have a fantastic jazzy feel, while Seal of the Wind, Yuna's Ballad, 1000 Words and Eternity each contain thier own beautiful and gentle melody. Then you would come across the such gems as Nightmare in a Cave and Demise, which have an very strong feeling of drama.

Each piece a masterpiece in its own right, however half of them are quite difficult to play, and most pieces (ie: Calm Lands, Demise, Creature Create...) are rhythmically almost-impossib-le. Time to crack out the metronome and play very slowly at first if you wish to master these pieces.

I recommend this book to intermediant-advanced players and I assure you: You will be satisfied by each and every piece.

I have read many reviews about these pieces. Most of them say that they are for intermediate and advanced players. Well that was a problem, everyone has their own definition of intermediate and advanced. I have the talent to play around the level of a piece called Fur Elise. And I consider that intermediate. Some pieces are a lot more challenging than the others. Some are quite easy for me after a little practice. Here is a list of all the pieces and my opinion on their difficulty.

01) Wind Crest ~The Three Trails~
This piece is pretty easy rhythmically but the key signature which this piece is written in is kind of a pain it has seven flats.
02) Yuna's Ballad
This is pretty easy over all
03) Paine's Theme
Rhythmically sort of hard
04) Creature Create
This is very rhythmically challenging! you would need to whip out that metronome
05) Calm Lands
I would also consider this a hard piece but not as hard as Creature Create
06) Zanarkand Ruins
This piece is on the easy side.
07) Akagi Party
I would put this on the same difficulty as Calm Lands
08) "Nightmare of a Cave"
While this piece is short its very fast, this piece can be either very hard or very easy if you can get the fingerings and have very quick fingers.
09) Demise
Pretty easy piece
10) 1000 Words
This piece is also pretty playable on the medium to easy side.
11) Epilogue ~Reunion~
I would rate this around a medium difficulty
12) Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~
This piece is pretty straight forward nothing, nothing too hard. Around Medium Difficulty

This book over all sounds exactly like the piano collections CD and if you want to sound like the CD this is the book to get! All the pieces have their own unique touch to it. My favorite pieces would be Wind Crest ~The Three Trails~, 1000 words, and Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~ those pieces are very melodic. I recommend this book to anyone who has been playing piano for at least 2 to 3 whole years and above.
