Default Square's Position - 10-16-2009, 10:40 PM

Does anyone know Square's official position on covering their songs? I am currently doing some song writing, and the song "To Zanarkand" would fit perfectly (with some alterations). As well, I want to use the song since a) it is an amazing song and b) it comes from one of my favorite games as a child. I just think it would be a great way to pay homage to the great memories the game has left me.

If anybody knows Square's thoughts on this, it would be greatly appreciated, as I would love to be able to go ahead, but I don't want to disrespect Square or Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano, all of whom did an amazing job.

Thanks!

Hmmm. I'm not sure about the laws regarding interpolation. I'm sure it would depend on the credit givin and if you are going to sell the song or not. You might look up the copyright laws or ask a music copyright specialist (Colleges usually have contact to them) You might also try asking someone who has released an album or something like that. (M. Gluck maybe?) I have not released any arrangements for actual sale, and neither have I interpolated another piece into any of my compositions. I know it's done, but I'm not sure how. John Williams interpolated "When You Wish Upon a Star" into the "Close Encounters" Theme. Credit was givin to both composers, so I'm not sure how exactly it would work. Like I said, try looking it up online, or get in contact with a music copyright specialist.

You should ask piano squall (aka M Gluck) about this. Also look through this website

Harry Fox Agency HFA

it might help you.
