Default Arrangement Competition - Shimomura ~ Links to entries posted - 07-29-2009, 09:10 PM

ARRANGEMENT COMPETITION ~ YOKO SHIMOMURA
------------------------------------------------------------------
I have now posted the entries. Please excuse the strange format. I wanted all the pieces to be downloadable so I uploaded them all into one folder via mediafire. Unfortunately Master Composer's entry could not be uploaded this way, because of the strange format. That entry has been posted seperately. Please enjoy the entries. Thanks again to everyone for participating, and congratulations to our winner, Lundquist!

JUDGING SYSTEM

All entries will be judged on the following point system: Judges will rank the piece on a scale of "one to ten" in three different catagories. (catagories listed below.) Each judge will submit his scores and those scores will be averaged for each catagory (rounded to the nearest whole number). The points earned per catagory will then be added together to form the final score. Thus a perfect score would be a 30. In the case of a tie, the judges will re-evaluate the pieces and debate and decide on the winner. If no decision can be made by the collaboration of judges, the head judge (The-Real-Link) will act as tie-breaker.

CATAGORIES

Technique: Grade the piece's technical merit. Its fluidity and confidence can all play a part, but complicated music will not be rewarded over simplicity if both attempts are equally adept. Notation can be taken into effect in this catagory, however it is not required that the piece be conventionally notated. Scores on notation will be passed based on the individual piece. (eg. The score of a piece in the electronica or remix genre would not be influenced by notational style. A piano solo piece, however, would recieve a lowered score if the notation is unreadable or incorrect.)

Musicality: Grade the success of the piece's musical direction. Analyze context, sensitivity, lyricism, and the overall intended effect from the composer's point of view. Try to determine whether the composition works in relation to its source, itself, and its own aesthetic and proportion rather than on preference.

Personal Tilt: Grade based on opinion. This is the chance to influence the score on taste; promising works that perhaps had a few rough edges can be raised, others lowered, within reason.

EXAMPLE SCORE

Entry Name: "Music Piece"

Score per catagory:
  • Judge 1 ~ Technique = 7, Musicality = 8, Personal Tilt = 7
  • Judge 2 ~ Technique = 7, Musicality = 9, Personal Tilt = 9
  • Judge 3 ~ Technique = 6, Musicality = 7, Personal Tilt = 6
  • Averaged Scores ~ Technique = 7, Muscality = 8, Personal Tilt = 7
  • Final Score ~ 22

PRIZES

Winner will receive their choice of any item from our store, excluding CD box sets and orchestral scores.

MISC INFO

Please report any problems to one or more of the three judges. If you suspect someone of plagerism, or any general rulebreaking, please report them. If you have any questions please feel free to email one of the judges.

x.x too bad I can't write music...

Ooh... but I'm excited to hear the submitted pieces... ^^

So hear this, please
And watch as your heart speeds up endlessly
And looks to the stars, as the sun goes down
Each breath that you take has a thunderous sound!
Everything, everything's magic

Just sit back, and hold on
But hold on tight-
Prepare for the best, and the fastest ride
Just reach out your hand, and I'll make you mine!

Everything, everything's magic...

So we choose any song she's composed and rearrange it? What categories are being judged? Originality, passion, etc?

Assuming it hasn't changed yet, the categories graded are:

Quote:
Technique: Grade the piece's technical merit. Its fluidity and confidence can all play a part, but complicated music will not be rewarded over simplicity if both attempts are equally adept. This section may be dropped by the judge if he or she feels either uncertain or uncomfortable on the subject.

I don't believe they will have changed for this competition, but if for some reason they are, it will be written up in the final edition of this thread.

Nicol hit the nail right on the head with that response. Those are the exact catagories that the pieces will be judged on. And to answer your other question. Anything composed by Yoko Shimomura can be used. You can make a medly, a remix; any type of arrangement is acceptable, as long as it is your original work.

When you say Shimomura must have composed it, what about stuff from Kingdom Hearts? As in, if there is a Disney song that has been arranged specifically for the game, does that still qualify?

Where are you? Here. What time is it? Now. What are you? This moment.

No. It has to have been composed by Shimomura. Thus Hikari and Passion do not count. Nor does any of the Disney songs.
