Default What secondary instruments are you learning? - 04-12-2009, 03:56 PM

So the title says it all...what secondary instruments are you learning? This can include instruments you have a great ability on but are still learning technique, fluidity, or whatever on the instrument.

The instruments I'm working on are the flute and the trumbone. I'm learning the flute primarily for flute methods for my music education major. I'm actually really enjoying learning it although I used to get lightheaded playing it. I have been playing the trumbone for four years now and learned it because my high school needed more trumbone players for the secondary jazz band. So I picked it up and still play it for the jazz band in college.

I still consider Viola as my secondary but I'm also taking up Violin and Cello. I also decided to take up Guitar again. Its kinda sad, but I probably won't continue on with any of my secondary instruments in college.

I've got both electric and acoustic. I find it much easier to play the electric.

I've been learning the viola for about two years now, though it's a little difficult to learn some of the more advanced techniques due to the lack of viola repertoire. I find there's a large gap in difficulty between the intermediate and advanced pieces, as the viola didn't really become popular until the 20th century, with composers like Walton and Shostokavich, who were powerhouses of virtuosity.

You think you can make a bassoon sound good? I'm sorry but that's impossible .

Haha Nicol has a good point. I believe there's only one performance major on Bassoon at my university and that's decent but not the best. Everyone else doesn't compare well to her.

Viola is an instrument that lacks a lot of repertoire and is highly underappreciated. But it is definately needed, especially in string quartets. But yeah, a lot of string majors talk about this.

Everyone keeps saying the viola is important. I disagree. If you take out the viola section in most symphony pieces, it still sounds decent.
