Terra Piano version fingering help (FF VI) -
12-21-2007, 07:25 AM
I have the sheet music and the fingerings aren't there, and while I can figure most of it out since it is self explanatory, some of the things I have trouble with.
About 1:04 into the song, there is a D Minor arpeggio with the left hand, and then after is a B flat major arpeggio. I have worked my way up until these parts, but I'm not sure what fingering to use... I'm not sure if I should also use my right hand to help play a couple of notes at the top of the arpeggio/run to give my left hand freedom to switch quickly back into the position it needs to be in for the other parts.

First off, welcome to the forums! You might consider posting a welcome thread in our introductions forum to tell us a little about yourself.
I learned this piece a few years ago and my teacher wrote in the fingering for me. When I get home tonight, I'll take a look at what she suggested because it worked pretty well for me. This was one of a few pieces that really pushed me to learn piano. It's a great piece!

I didn't think I'd get that fast of a reply -- thanks
I'll make a new post very soon in the introductions thread.
Before I do that, I'm going to take the sheet music that I have and put the fingerings that I use for it to show everyone; I'll post it here when I'm finished with what I have so far. Be back in a few =)

Excuse the way everything is jumbled up, but I wanted to do it as quickly as possible to give you an idea.
The bottom in parentheses is an alternate way that I think you can play this, and the top section above it without the ( ) is the way that I play it personally. On the 2nd page with the arpeggio part, I get kind of stuck and I figured out different ways to play it, so I'm not sure what to do.
I've stuck with nothing but the sheet music and figured out all of this fingering myself, so I really have no idea what I'm doing
I'm probably doing something wrong, but I think the way I put is ok. I need some help with doing the rest of it though...

I learned this piece a few months ago, the arpeggios aren't much of a problem if you practice broken triads in your left hand for a while, as the fingering used for them applies pretty much to the ones used here.
However, I used 3-5-3-4-5-4-3-5, assuming 1 is your pinky and 5 is your thumb. That isn't a very complete list at all, but practicing the triads, as I said, will give you a much greater idea of what to do here.

3-5-3-4-5-4-3-5 as in the part that goes G2-D3-A4-Bb4-D4-Bb4-A4-G3? I'm not sure which part you're talking about.
Sometimes I get confused with the finger numbers, but the way I try to do it is like below
thumb - 1
index - 2
middle - 3
ring - 4
pinky - 5
And that goes for both hands, so it's like a mirror.
Maybe you mean that just in general, it's 3-5-3-4-5-4-3-5 for root, fifth, octave, third, fifth, then back down the same way you came up.

I mean:
In the left hand:
pinky - 1
ring - 2
middle - 3
index - 4
thumb - 5
And reverse for the right hand.
The part I was talking about is the pattern in the first measure that you listed "???????? etc."

Hey Tim -- did you ever take a look at those fingerings? I've put Terra on the backburner for now since I got burnt out trying to figure out the rest of it =/
I'll continue to work on it, but it's taking a bit of my time to finally get past a few parts where I have no idea what fingers to use.

Hey there, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. If you're still stuck on that section at 1:04, this is the fingering my teacher recommended for me in the left hand:
5213135314321213, 5212123552121235
In my case, the thumb is finger 1, and pinky is finger 5.
Also note that the E in the DM arpeggio should be natural if you're going by the sound on the CD. Please let me know if you need more fingering.

Hey Tim -- thanks a lot for helping out.
The fingering you posted is working perfectly and I'm already starting to make it sound like I'm playing it rather than just fooling with it.
All of the fingerings before what you posted is simple enough to just use anything, but I'm still not certain on some parts. I'll skip the beginning/slow part.
For the Gmin arp part, I use 52121231, and for the F part, I'm using 5212(1)212. The (1) is the thumb on the right hand, but I don't think that that is the best way to do it.
