Default Favorite Chords - 06-03-2008, 03:28 PM

What are your favorite chords? My personal favorites are 10ths, 9ths of all kinds, and augmented.

This is kind of a silly question... is there any reason you like those chords?

I personally like the fully diminished vii chord. It has way to many practical uses... you can modulate on it, a brief harmonic extension of a I chord as a neighboring tone(or 'i' in this case), it leads well into hexatonic runs, and its incredibly dramatic and tense sounding.

The German Augmented 6th chord is a close runner up. I love to use either chord when I have the chance, but it comes up infrequently for some of the rediculous functions (especially the German).

I like their timbre, sound quality. The essence of the third (10th) above the rest in the 10th chord is beautiful, and 9th chords are so dark-sounding.

I like 7th major chords, especially at the end of arrangements.

Yeah, they're a bit dissonant, but when used well, maj7s are beautiful...or sometimes creepy. I'm looking at you, J-E-N-O-V-A...

I love chord progressions that are ancient or medieval in nature and can be played on a harp without pedals or tuning levers. I also love natural minor scales, I think they are really magical (Shadow of the Colossus final boss music ^0^)

Lol, I really have no idea what you're talking about here

But anyways, my favorite would have to be simple Seventh minor chords, I love the Ebm7 chord.

I personally like minor 6ths; they broken, they sound very whimsicle, enchanting. I've not used them much, but the one example I can think of is in one of my compositions, when I used a broken i6 in the right hand and the tonic in left, ascending up a chromatic NT and going into a II7.

My favourite progression is just a very simple I->V7.

Blobbery.
