I added an instrument range chart to the attachments. Keep in mind that this is a chart of the sounding pitches of instruments, not of transposed written pitches.

Hmmm...yeah...a lot of these prices are outrageous...sad thing is my music department greatly supports Sibelius and prefers it over anything. I haven't gotten it yet, but I might have to.

Yeah. A lot of times the difference between free programs and costly programs is not worth $100 or more.

Yeah, for the assignments I've had, Notation Composer has worked for me without a problem. And I don't see much difference between that, Finale, and Sibelius.

No offense, but your instrument range is grossly inaccurate. for example, I can go almost 2 octaves lower and one octave higher than what is said on your chart(trombone, euphonium) Also, trombone's go WAY lower than french horns do, and there is no way in hell a bass clarinet has more octaves than a trombone/euphonium. I can play 6 octaves of c on my tener trombone(with f attachment for the lowest; the highest being the highest note on a viola according to your chart), possibly 2 or more octaves higher than the best bass clarinet or bassoon player at my school, not to mention lower as well, and your chart marks them as higher and lower instruments. I feel that the trombone's range is very poorly recognized, as the only brass instrument that I think has more octaves is a French horn. I'm speaking from a trombone players perspective, so I can only imagine the inaccuracies of the other brass. For instance, I know for a fact French horns and trumpets can play higher than what is recorded on the chart. Where did you get your information? The estimates on those charts usually don't do justice to the players of those instruments, specifically brass instruments.
Of course, if the chart is meant for recommended ranges, then it is slightly better. Still innacurate, specifically on the low end, but my highest and lowest notes aren't exactly the most pleasant notes.

huh. I never noticed, but the string ranges are also wrong. I don't use this chart personally. This was one of the only charts that could be hosted on as an attachment. I made my own (much more accurate) but it is too big to host as an attachment. Also try to keep in mind of the fact that ranges are not definite. Don't forget that some notes can be played in the extended ranges but don't sound as good. lol. I'll see if I can figure out someway to host mine. I know that the trumpet can play higher than that, but remember that the french horn transposes a fifth. I believe that the C above (written pitch) is probably highest for the french horn. I think I may just take up a project on this.
