Default Notation Question - 04-28-2009, 03:50 PM

I consulted by Notation Dictionary, but I'm not sure if it answered my question. If I'm writing a piece of music that has a choir section in which the choir does not say any actualy words, but "chants" the music. Should I just leave the music as simple note notation, or should I add lyrics using words like "ooh" and "ahh"?

I can't remember, at the moment, what my dictionary said...

Yes, above what ever measure the "chant" starts i would put "Chant" then place under the notes add the "ooh" and "ahh" sound. My band is playing the Halo theme and thats exactly what it looks like.

Lol, you mean that really mediocre chart for band? I played that 4 years ago in middle school and it was boring then.

I would use words like "ooh" and "ahh". If you were doing doing a legato sound, use only words with vowels or you may get some natural accents.

You do need to write in oohs and ahhs because it affects the timbre of the sound. oohs and ahhs both give different timbres to a piece.

You definitely need to be very very clear when writing out chanting for choir. You want the choir to have that uniform timbre, so write out exactly what you want them to sing. If you feel silly writing out nonsensical syllables try researching some Latin phrases for the chanting bits, that always adds some mystique xD

Yeah, exactly...be very specific for this kind of this. The difference in the vowels makes a huge difference in how it'll sound.
