Pieces of the Soul: A Symphony
This is the secret project I have been working on for the past 2 months or so, and it is almost complete. This is a symphony in 6 movements, meant to represent certain feelings and emotions we all have. Try to guess what each one is....
This symphony is written for a full symphony orchestra, and is my first large-scale piece. So please give me feedback on it, I would love to try to improve my compositional skills.
At the moment, you do need finale to view these files. (or at least finale reader)
Thank you for listening to these, and please give me some constructive criticism!Last edited by Roboashura; 03-01-2009 at 03:23 PM.
Please give my syphony a listen! Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Another update - the files are now in MIDI format. More people should be able to listen to them, so please do so. I could really, really use some constructive criticism.
Please give my syphony a listen! Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Beautiful! I love it all.
Why must I keep changing my signature?

Uhh, not that I can think of. I've only listened to them once, and since its such a large scale composition, it's hard to pick up anything straight away. Which is good.
There was one thing that not so much annoyed me... but just didn't FEEL quite right... in movement 5: earth, there was an underlying trumpet(?) thingy with a rhythm: minim, minim, crotchet (according to finale - I opened the midi's in that). Every time that little thing occurred, I was hoping that that last note would be on the half-beat at the end of the bar so it would read: 1 3 &... if you get what I mean... I think it just kinda doesn't move enough with the last note on the first beat of the next bar.
EDIT: I made you a diagram to show what I mean. Words get so confusing sometimes.

Obviously, there would be a full bar rest in the next bar in 'I'd prefer...'
Appart from that one little thing, I liked everything else :]Last edited by random14; 03-10-2009 at 04:11 AM. Reason: A picture's worth 1000 words.

I actually really like that idea. I think I'll change that.

"Fire" sounds similer to Uematsu's "For Those Who Fight" at the beginning.

Congrats for your first large scale composition

Ok now for some constructive criticism:
I noticed that some of the textures become repetitive and static after a while.
Also maybe you could try varying or playing around with a theme instead of repeating it. Like what random14's suggested in his post, except you can use both of those motives to give some variety.
Have you heard your piece performed live? Doing this will def help a lot.
I actually have to agree with Worcnagrom that 'Fire' sounds noticeably a little too similar to the FFVII battle theme.

You truly are a talented composer!
I love it and can't wait to here it with good (no GM!) sounds!
