Default Rythm/Music Games - 03-24-2008, 05:32 PM

I've been wondering about this lately; do any of you play any music/rythm games (such as DDR, ITG etc.)? I've been curious, since this is a forum dedicated to video game music, I thought a lot of you might play them.

I play a lot of Stepmania and Beatmania, I've also started playing Audiosurf and Synthesia lately. Synthesia is a pretty interesting little game; you can hook up your MIDI enabled keyboard to your computer, load any MIDI file you want, and start playing.

How about you guys?

One of the new hypes you've missed is AudioSurf. I played this some, and it's really cool. It's not like the other games where you have to press something at the right time. You just navigate your ship in different lanes and collect colours and combinations to earn points.

Another game I still have that is hard to get the original of is one called Vib Ribbon. It's a unique game that is loaded into the PlayStation memory due to it's light weight, and then you can put in your own CD's and jump to the rhythm of your own music. It's the predecessor to games that run other music than the basic selection given by the manufacturer.

I never really cared much for Step Mania, DDR or Guitar Hero, but I bet those will be the winners in any such a competition.

I've only played DDR and Guitar Hero, but I've always been curious as to if there is a similar game for the piano. I'm glad you mentioned this game, Synthesia.

I was expecting a huge surge of Guitar Hero and Rock Band players as well, actually. I did not like either game as they were painfully easy and the songs that came with them weren't my kind of thing. I preffer games like Beatmania, Stepmania and Synthesia because you can load your own songs into them, which enables me to play a lot of classical or soundtrack music.

Also yes, I did forget Audiosurf *is ashamed*.

There were a few songs that i found interesting in each Guitar Hero game, but overall I wasn't too impressed by them. I would enjoy the games if I could play with my own songs (like Synthesia). However, even with my own songs, I find it difficult to play rhythm games for a long time or get addicted to them.

Guitar Hero was painfully easy? You must be some kind of prodigy then. I just recently discovered Guitar Hero and I'm hopelessly addicted to it. I don't get a whole lot of time to play, but I'm just finishing up GH2 on Hard and have passed about 1/3 of the songs on expert. Expert is kicking my butt, and from what I hear, GH3 is way harder than GH2. The music in the series is not my cup of tea either, but I don't even notice the music that much when I'm playing.

A keyboard game would be fun. I'm going to have to look into some of these other games.

I've been playing Patapon on my journey to and from work, but I can't say I'm a fan of Rhythm games in general.

Guitar Hero as it is is not as difficult as some rythm games can get (see: http://youtube.com/watch?v=L768h7ipRD0&feature=related ["Go Beyond" and "Mei", Beatmania IIDX Distorted]), though, I find that the Guitar Hero controller makes the game much more difficult than it is when using the PS2 controller. I'm more used to games where I use a keyboard or my feet, and when I use the keyboard I'm able to use two hands, so the Guitar Hero controller kills me when I try and use it on harder songs. Though, once you get used to it, it's not very difficult.
