FF7 or FF8 -
03-15-2009, 10:29 PM
Ok, so I was wondering what was the community's take on this. Which game is better? I've heard arguements for both games. So go ahead a give your favorite and why you think that is the better game.

I had a beautiful post...but it took a while to type, so I got logged out, and it disappeared.
::sigh::
My initial response was to type "FF6", but I didn't want to be that guy.
FF8 wins for me, though it's a close call. I enjoyed both games; though neither is in my top 4 in the series, they have their merits, and I can easily understand why others enjoy them as much as they do. For me, personally, FF7 didn't live up to all of the hype surrounding it. That probably had to do with my expectations based on the ones I'd played beforehand, as well as the fact that I played it more sporadically than the others (more time between gaming sessions...it was drawn out, making it harder to connect the dots in the story, which is a huge problem with this one). I freakin' loved the Materia system, and leveled up for fun after I'd beat the game. That says a lot right there.
Something about the presentation of FF8 did it for me, a bit more that FF7 did. The beauty of the integration of Laguna's storyline into Squall's, and how all of the characters were connected...I loved it. While I had a love-hate relationship with the battle system, the soundtrack was fantastic (particularly Don't Be Afraid, the 5/4 battle theme; I had a blast arranging it). I enjoyed the junctioning of spells, too. The opening video is still one of my favorites from any game ever.

I personally prefered FFVIII. The story was a little immature at points, but overall I had a nice time running through it, and I found it was a bit more jointed than FFVII. The soundtrack is what did it for me, though: overall I found the music to be much more sophisticated, which, though this may sound a shade pretentious, lead me to enjoy it much more. Tracks like Dance With the Balamb Fish, Ami and Breezy just made the soundtrack win for me. Overall though I thoroughly enjoyed both games.

Heh, I'm trying not to take a side quite yet. But both of you two have great points. I do believe that FFVIII had a better overall soundtrack although One Winged Angel is highly recognized. I also believe that FFVII is not as good as most people say. One of the best things about it is that FFVII has great characters, but not necessarily a great storyline to match it. Also the great difference in the themes: Love v. Death plays a big role.

I'm going to have to go with FFVII. Before i even started seeing all the other fans online, i liked FFVII for a bunch of reasons. The characters were amazingly developed and were all unique. I personally liked Vincent, Red, and Cloud the most out of all of them. I also found the story was really interesting; it took me two play throughs to completely understand certain parts of it (i was like 6 or 7 years old at the time). I found the battle system more fun than FF8 and also, i preffered the soundtrack for VII over VIII.
On the flip side... FFVIII is probably second on my list of favourites (FFI and FFVII are my favourites). The main things that stood out the most for me in FFVIII was the huge amount of options in the games. There were side-quests, the junction system allowed for so many different options to develop characters, etc. Then the music, while i didn't like it quite as much as FFVII, was still amazing. Lastly, the story did come together really well with all the characters.
Conclusion- I preferred FFVII or FFVIII.
Fact- They're both two of the greatest games every to be played.
Where are you? Here. What time is it? Now. What are you? This moment.

Wow, I think that's pretty awesome that you played FFVII when you were 6 or seven. The first time I ever played a Final Fantasy game was when I was 13 and borrowing from a friend on vacation. He said I should really try and I loved it and became infatuated with Final Fantasy and especially its music.

I actually thought the storyline was one of the best, right behind FFX. I thought it trumped VIII's by far...just my opinion.
I liked VII much more, but yeah, it is overrated I must say. I was expecting something that would really suck me in and put me in a whole new world. It was good; but I really didn't think it lives up to the hype; there where a lot of grammar issues and weird plot twists...although overall it was pretty epic.
As far as the music goes, they are both really good, but I'm leaning a little toward VII...but they are both really close, I think VII and VIII are my fav 2 FF OSTs.

Ahhh yes...FFX probably does have the best storyline. I just restarted playing it yesterday!
Now that I think about it...the storyline does trump FFVIII's a bit. The storyline in 8 is a bit more bland...oh well. I'm still not sure as to which one I'd prefer, I've just heard GREAT arguements for both.
With FFVII I did become enchanted but it isn't as great as the hype that has surrounded it, although it's pretty close hehe.

FFVIII definitely beats VII for me.
The setting of VIII and the mix of both militaristic cities combined with sorceresses and the musical themes "did it" for me more than VII's often-cartoony scenes. I know part of that is due to VII being the first one developed on the PSX, but I still can't overlook that just because it's old. I think VIII aged better, graphically.
I also feel that, of the three PSX Final Fantasy games, VII's soundtrack is weakest. Cosmo Canyon is a great song--probably the best on the original soundtrack, but compared against songs like Liberi Fatali, Fisherman's Horizon, Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec, and others, it falls flat. I feel like VIII's and IX's soundtracks had overall themes, with VIII being kind of militaristic and utilitarian, and IX being this medieval fantasy world, where VII just kind of jumps all over the place.
So I go with VIII over VII.

I have to say VII. I like more drama than romanticism. Also the battle system was more comfortable. Junction-system made VIII super-easy. If you have patience to draw enough magic and junction them to right places, you're nearly invincible. Wasn't much of a challenge. Better thing about VIII is that it's much more longer. It took me under 30 hours to beat VII and over 50 to beat VIII. When playing rpgs, I want them to last long. Music in the games are kinda different, hard to compare.
